Overview

Let’s start with a general overview of the three cameras:

GoPro Hero 10 Black

Hero 10 Black compare gopro models

Launched on September 16, 2021, the newest gadget by the brand – the GoPro Hero 10 Black strives to eliminate two of the biggest annoyances of its predecessor – the GoPro Hero 9 Black. One, Hero 9 always felt a bit sluggish when it came to its speed. Two, its low light performance was not up to the mark. The GoPro 10 Black addresses both of these pain points in a superb way!

Thanks to the powerful GP-2 Processor, the overall performance of the action camera is significantly better than Hero 9. Upon testing it in low light, we felt that the camera performs noticeably better here too. Hero 10 bumps up photo resolution up to 23 megapixels, and can shoot up to 5.3K videos at 60 frames per second (FPS); 4K up to 120 FPS; and 2.7K at 240 FPS. HyperSmooth – 4.0 is an upgraded EIS version that this camera has for steadier video. You can now apply stabilization to higher video resolutions (5.3K30, 4K60, and 2.7K120).

One of the standout features of the Hero 8 Black is the introduction of customizable presets, allowing users to save and switch between frequently used settings quickly. Key Differences: Hero 8 vs Hero 9 vs Hero 10

Listed below are the key differences between GoPro Hero 8 Black, GoPro Hero 9 Black, and GoPro Hero 10 Black:

#1. Design

The GoPro Hero 10 and Hero 9 Black look almost identical, with around ten percent bigger size than the Hero 8 Black. Therefore, you get a bigger touchscreen around the back of both the cameras at 2.27 inches as compared to 1.95 inches on the Hero 8 Black. In addition, the Hero 10 & 9 Black also feature a full-color front screen as opposed to Hero 8 Black’s monochrome front display. The color screen is especially helpful for vloggers, as they can frame up their shots even without access to the rear screen.

#2. Resolution

With a 23 MP sensor, the GoPro Hero 10 Black has the highest resolution of any GoPro camera. At 20MP, Hero 9’s resolution is also almost double the sensor resolution of Hero 8 Black. The Hero 9 & 10 are capable of shooting 5K, 5.3 videos, respectively. On the other hand, the maximum resolution provided by Hero 8 is 4K. All this automatically means that both the latest GoPro models deliver noticeably crisper shots with much more detail as compared to their predecessors.

#3. Battery Life

With the launch of the Hero 9 Black, GoPro bumped up the battery capacity to 1720mAh. The latest Hero 10 also features the same battery. This battery boosts the stamina of these latest cameras by about 30%, when you compare it with their predecessor – the Hero 8 Black with 1220mAh. The bigger battery size of Hero 9 &10  Black also means that it can handle extremely cold weather better.

#4. Connectivity

All three cameras support connectivity through WiFi and Bluetooth, which enables them to connect to a smart device with the GoPro App. These cameras also support Livestream at 1080p. These cameras have been built keeping in mind the vlogging aspect. All have their own Media Mods (sold separately), which add a directional microphone ideal for vlogging. You also get other useful vlogging accessories compatible with these cameras like Display Mod, Light Mod, etc.

#5. HyperSmooth

GoPro Hero 8 gave a significant upgrade to HyperSmooth by introducing HyperSmooth 2.0. Since then, GoPro has been consistently upgrading its EIS to their better versions, with HyperSmooth 3.0 in Hero 9 Black and HyperSmooth 4.0 in Hero 10 Black. On the latest Hero 10 Black, you can even apply stabilization to higher video resolutions (5.3K30, 4K60, and 2.7K120).

#6. TimeWarp

TimeWarp – a fun Hyperlapse mode for creating super-smooth motion time-lapses is even better with TimeWarp 2.0 on Hero 8 and TimeWarp 3.0 on Hero 9 & 10 Black. You get amazing hyperlapse shots without the annoying 10% crop. Plus it’s also available in all frame rates and resolutions in the latest GoPros.

Do you wonder what is TimeWarp and how to set it? Then read our ultimate guide.

#7. Swappable Lens Cover

Until GoPro Hero 7 Black, all GoPro Hero Black models featured swappable lens cover. However, with the Hero 8 Black, GoPro changed this and the lens port was fused to the body, which made it non-removable. With the latest Hero 9 & 10 Black, GoPro has reverted back to the swappable lens. Not only this – the company has also created an interchangeable lens mod called the Max Lens Mod.

#8. Remote Control

All three GoPro cameras can be controlled wirelessly via GoPro mobile app using WiFi and Bluetooth. However, the Hero 9 & 10 Black don’t work with the Smart Remote and Remo Remote while the Hero 8 Black does.

GoPro Hero 8 vs GoPro Hero 9

The GoPro Hero 8 and the Hero 9 are both exceptional cameras, but there are some significant differences between them. The Hero 9 has a larger 2.27-inch rear touch display compared to the Hero 8’s 2-inch display. Additionally, the Hero 9 has a front display, which can be used for vlogging or selfies.

The front display shows basic information like battery life, recording mode, and a countdown timer. On the other hand, the Hero 8’s design incorporates the mounting system right on the case, making it easier to swap mounts quickly.

When it comes to image stabilization, both cameras have excellent HyperSmooth capabilities. The Hero 8 features HyperSmooth 2.0, which is already an outstanding feature. However, the Hero 9 has HyperSmooth 3.0, which takes image stabilization to a whole new level. The Hero 9’s HyperSmooth 3.0 has a higher level of stabilization compared to the Hero 8’s 2.0. Furthermore, the Hero 9 has an upgraded TimeWarp 3.0 feature that also utilizes HyperSmooth 3.0, making it the best time-lapse option available.
