Red Filter Diving Lens
Red filters enhance the quality of your underwater GoPro footage by bringing back the reds that are lost as you dive deep into the ocean. There are three different kinds of red filters:
- Light Red filter (for color correction in clear freshwater at shallow depth: 2-15ft),
- Red Filter (for color correction in blue/tropical water at depth: 15-85 ft), and
- Magenta Filter (for color correction in waters that appear green, like in lakes and reservoirs at depth: 8-75 ft).
I suggest that you use a multi-filter pack with your GoPro so that you can easily change filters as you go in deeper or come back to shallow waters.
Here’s the one that I’ve personally used:

Tips to Capture Scuba Diving Shots with GoPro
Here are some tips for capturing epic shots using your GoPro camera while scuba diving:
Prepare the Gear
First and foremost, you should prepare your gear to ensure that your camera is fully protected while you go scuba diving. So, depending upon your needs and preferences, attach the required accessories (as mentioned above) to your GoPro before going out and about.
Ensure that the Battery is Fully Charged
Always ensure that the battery of your GoPro is fully charged before you take it underwater for shooting your dive. That’s really important because you won’t like ending up with an empty GoPro battery while you’re in the middle of your dive!
Disable Bluetooth and WiFi
You don’t need and can’t use Bluetooth and WiFi while you’re underwater. So, it’s a great idea to disable both before you go scuba diving with your GoPro.
Ensure Enough Space in SD Card
You can’t change your GoPro SD card underwater. So, always make sure that you have a large memory card installed in your GoPro with a lot of available memory. Or even better, use an empty SD card!
Record Long Sequences/Avoid Too Many Takes
When you go scuba diving with your GoPro, you should try to record long sequences of your underwater experience. That’s because when you’re underwater, your primary focus should be diving, and not recording! So, for a truly enjoyable experience, avoid too many takes while filming.
Recommended GoPro Scuba Diving Settings
Before you go underwater for scuba diving, make sure that the following settings are adjusted on your GoPro for quality footage.
- 1080p Resolution
- 60 FPS
- WIDE Lens
- HyperSmooth Image Stabilization ON
- ISO 400
- Sharpness High
- Color – GoPro, Auto White Balance.
- Turn Screensaver and Auto-Off to Never.
While all these settings are great, please note that in case you are diving deep into the water at dark spots, avoid using Hypersmooth as it gives a jello effect in low light. Also, I would recommend that you reduce the frame rate to 30 FPS in low-light, so that the camera is able to capture more light.
Word of Advice
If you use the recommended accessories while scuba diving with your GoPro, and put all these useful tips into practical use, you’re sure to achieve some amazing underwater scuba diving footage with your GoPro.
While all the accessories mentioned above are meant to enhance your shot, there’s one that is the most essential for the protection of your GoPro. It is the GoPro Waterproof Housing. Never attempt to take your GoPro for deep-sea scuba diving without using waterproof housing!
