Following are the initial steps to set up your new GoPro action camera:

Insert the Memory Card

After unboxing, the first thing to do is to insert a micro SD card into your Hero 11. The memory card is like the heart of the camera that stores all your beautiful memories in it. Some of the GoPro cameras come with an SD card and some don’t but make sure that you have one before beginning. There are several options available in the market to choose from. You can select the one that fits your requirements the best.

The micro SD card will be below specs and is compatible with GoPro Hero 11 Black.

  1. The memory card should be a microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card.
  2. The card should be manufactured by a known company like SanDisk, Delkin, Sony, etc.
  3. Its speed rating should be minimum Class 10, UHS-1
  4. The action camera can hold up to 512GB and 1TB capacity microSD cards.

GoPro Hero 11 Black: How to insert & eject the microSD Card?

Follow these steps to insert a microSD card into your Hero 11 Black & eject it:

  1. Slide the tab towards the bottom and lift the side door up.
  2. With your camera off, insert the microSD card into the card slot with the text of the card facing the rear side of the camera.
  3. You can eject the card by pressing it into the slot with your fingernail.

Insert the Battery

After inserting the memory card, the next step is to insert the battery. The GoPro Hero 11 Black comes with a new high-performance Enduro battery which improves the battery performance by 38% in cold weather conditions.

  1. Slide the tab towards the bottom and lift the side door up.
  2. With your camera off, insert the battery into the battery compartment.
  3. Make sure the text on the back of the battery is facing the back of the camera.
  4. Push the battery down.

Pro Tip: Always keep a spare battery along for uninterrupted shooting.

Attach the USB-C cable to the port (side door) and plug the other end into a portable power bank or wall charger to charge the camera. A red light flashes on the camera. It will take a few hours for the camera to fully charge. Once it’s done, the red light disappears. Plug out the cable and close the latch door properly.

Update the Camera Firmware

This is one of the most important steps. To get the latest features and the best GoPro performance, you need to update the camera firmware to the latest edition.

You can update the camera software in two ways.

  1. With the GoPro App
  2. Manual Update by visiting the GoPro website.

Steps to update GoPro Hero 11 Black with the GoPro App:

  1. Download the GoPro Quik App from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  2. Follow the steps on-screen to start pairing.
  3. The app instructs if new software is available. Start updating.

Steps to update the GoPro Hero 11 Black Manually:

  1. Visit gopro.com/update.
  2. Choose ‘Hero 11 Black’ from the list of cameras.
  3. Select ‘Update your camera manually.
  4. Follow the given instructions.

Power ON the Camera

Post the updation of the camera firmware, turn on the GoPro. You can do that by simply pressing the Power/Mode button, located on the side of the camera. Once the camera screen starts displaying information, the camera is on.

To power OFF the camera, Press and hold the Power/Mode button for 3 seconds continuosly.

You are ready to Shoot

After your camera is turned ON, you are now ready to shoot. Swipe down from the top of the screen to view the dashboard. By default, the camera is in Easy Mode (narrows down the main settings for you). To change, swipe over the screen and you will see Controls at the bottom. Change settings to Pro to get started.

The Video Mode includes Standard, Full frame, Activity, Cinematic, and Slo-Mo presets. The Photo Mode includes Photo, Burst, and Night presets. Lastly, the Time Lapse Mode includes TimeWarp Video, Star trails, Light Painting, Vehicle Light Trails, Time Lapse, and Night Lapse presets.

To change the preset :

  1. Tap the capture settings.
  2. Tap the preset that you want.

Simply press the Shutter button to start recording. Press the Shutter button again to stop recording (only for Video & Time Lapse).

Last Word Of Advice


With every new camera series, GoPro is getting better. If you have a GoPro Subscription, you can auto-upload your clips to GoPro’s cloud service where they will be automatically edited into a highlight video for you.

You can automatically clear your SD card after your footage has been uploaded to the GoPro Cloud. Go to Preferences > Auto Upload > Auto Clear and select ON or OFF.
