Best GoPro HERO 7 Video Settings

Here are the best GoPro HERO 7 settings to produce the perfect video with your action camera:

Video Resolution & FPS

The video resolution refers to the number of horizontal lines used in each frame of the video captured on your Hero 7 Black. For example, a 1080p video is made up of 1080 horizontal lines. Similarly, a 4K video is made up of 3840 horizontal lines. More lines equal greater resolution. That’s why 4K delivers a more detailed picture than 1080p.

The Frames per second or FPS, on the other hand, refers to the number of frames captured in each second of video. Higher fps values (60, 120, or 240) are better at capturing fast-action shots and slow-motion playback.

Here are the best use cases of different resolutions:

  • 4K: Highest resolution on HERO 7. Great for tripod and fixed-position shots.
  • 2.7K: For stunning, cinema-quality results for professional productions. Also good for high-resolution point-of-view
    body and gear-mounted shots.
  • 1440p: Great for capturing fast action, POV shots, and sharing to social media.
  • 1080p: Great for all shots and sharing to social media.

Note: Higher video resolutions capture more detail and clarity, but they’re generally available at lower fps values. Lower video resolutions, on the other hand, capture less detail and clarity, but they can be shot at higher fps values.

Field of View (FOV)

The field of view (FOV) refers to how much of the scene is captured by your GoPro HERO 7 Black. You get three FOVs for capturing videos on this action camera: SuperView, Wide & Linear. SuperView captures the most of the scene, while Linear captures the least. Wide is the default FOV.

Here are the best use cases of different FOVs:

  • SuperView: It stretches 4:3 content to fit a 16:9 screen. Great for body and gear-mounted shots.
  • Wide (default): It’s a large FOV that’s great for action shots where you want to capture as much as possible within the frame.
  • Linear: This one is a mid-range FOV. It removes the fisheye effect of SuperView and Wide. Perfect for aerial footage.

Low Light Setting

The GoPro HERO 7 Black identifies if there isn’t enough light for your shot and automatically lowers the frame rate to improve video quality. It uses Auto Low Light to automatically adjust to darker settings.

This setting is set to Auto by default and is especially helpful when you’re moving in and out of low-light conditions. It works with all resolutions when shooting at 50 or 60 fps.

How to Turn Off Auto Low Light?

  • From the Video screen, tap the settings.
  • Tap Low Light.

Stabilization

The GoPro HERO 7 Black features HyperSmooth video stabilization that delivers ultra-smooth professional footage by accurately predicting your movements and correcting for camera shake. It offers you insanely smooth gimbal-like footage without the gimbal.

The HyperSmooth stabilization is perfect for biking, skating, skiing, handheld shots, and more. By default, it is set to Auto. In the GoPro HERO 7, HyperSmooth is available in 4K, 2.7K, 1440p, 1080p and 720p resolutions.

Protune

Protune lets you take manual control of Color, ISO Limit, Exposure, microphone settings, and more. It unlocks your camera’s full creative potential by giving you manual control of Color, White Balance, Shutter Speed, and more. So, turn on Protune if you want to manually tweak these settings.
