The GoPro Hero 9 boasts a longer battery life, thanks to its beefier 1,720mAh battery, which is larger than its predecessors.
The company claims it offers up to 30 percent better battery life compared to the GoPro Hero 8 Black.
In this article, you’ll learn the specs and details of the GoPro Hero 9 battery life.
Plus, I’ll share some handy tips on how to extend it, along with a couple of battery pack replacements that I personally recommend.
How Many Hours Can GoPro 9 Record
The GoPro Hero 9 features a 1720 mAh Lithium-ion battery. When it’s in the Hero 9, the camera works for around 2 hours and 11 minutes on a full charge (when recording in 4K). So, you’ll have to pack an extra battery if you’re planning a full day of shooting. Like the previous GoPro cameras, you can easily charge the battery while its inside your camera – the simplest way to charge it.
It’s worth noting that the actual recording time of the GoPro Hero 9 can vary depending on several factors such as the recording resolution, frame rate, and usage of Wi-Fi and other features. For example, recording in 1080p or 720p will give you longer battery life than recording in 4K.
However, you won’t be able to use the old Hero 5, 6, 7, & 8 external battery charger with the Hero 9 batteries. Also, if you’re upgrading from an older Hero model, your spare batteries won’t work with the Hero 9, since it has a newer (bigger) battery.
Why Is My GoPro Hero 9 Battery Draining So Fast?
If you’re experiencing fast battery drain on your GoPro Hero 9, there are several possible reasons why this might be happening. Here are some common causes of fast battery drain and how to address them:
High power mode
If you have enabled high power mode on your Hero 9, this can drain the battery faster than normal. To disable high power mode, go to Preferences > Performance > High Performance and toggle it off.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
If you have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled on your Hero 9, this can also drain the battery faster. Make sure to disable these features when you’re not using them, or use the QuickCapture feature to turn on the camera and start recording without having to use the app.
Screen brightness
The screen brightness of the Hero 9 can also have a significant impact on battery life. Try lowering the brightness of the screen to conserve battery power.
Cold temperatures
Cold temperatures can affect the battery life of your Hero 9. If you’re using your camera in cold temperatures, try keeping the battery warm by storing it in an insulated bag or keeping it close to your body.
Old battery
If you’ve had your Hero 9 for a while, it’s possible that the battery has degraded over time and is no longer holding a charge as well as it used to. In this case, you may need to replace the battery with a new one.

9 Tips to Extend Your GoPro Hero 9 Battery Life
Did you have better expectations by the new GoPro Hero 9 battery life? If the extra 23 minutes that you get with Hero 9 (compared to Hero 8 batteries) are still not enough for you, then try implement these nine simple tips to significantly extend your GoPro Hero 9 battery life:
Keep Your GoPro Off When Not Recording
This one is a no-brainer actually! You should keep your Hero 9 off when you’re not recording. This will help in increasing its running time.
Keep Your Batteries Warm in Cold Weather
Lithium-ion batteries don’t well in cold weather. So, consider putting your GoPro battery in an inside zippered pocket of your jacket when the camera is not in use.
Turn Off the LCD Screen
Keeping your Hero 9’s LCD screen on uses more power. So, if you’re looking to save your GoPro’s battery life, you’re better off sticking to the old-fashioned way of not using the LCD screen while using the camera.
Keep Protune Off
Keeping Protune off when recording with your Hero 9 will slightly improve battery life. However, you’ll have to compromise on image quality if you do this.
Use a Wall Charger
Instead of USB cable from your PC, you should charge your GoPro battery using a wall-charger. It will help you get a faster and better charge.
Update the Firmware
Updating the firmware of your Hero 9 camera will not only fix lingering issues, but it can also increase the battery life, thanks to any small fixes the company might have implemented to improve its battery performance.
Don’t use the Extra Settings (WiFi, GPS, Voice Control)
Turning off the extra settings like WiFi, GPS, voice control etc. can boost the battery life of Hero 9. However, please note that you won’t get a drastic difference in running time. This step will just add an extra 10-15 minutes.
Reduce the Recording Resolution or Frame Rate
The fewer pixels and frames your GoPro has to record, the lesser energy it will use. So, reduce the recording resolution or frame rate of Hero 9 to boost the recording time.
Bring along Extra Batteries
If you bring along fully charged extra batteries with you, you can easily double or triple (depending upon the number of batteries you have) the running time of your GoPro Hero 9 camera.

Can I Overcharge a GoPro?
It is generally not recommended to overcharge your GoPro battery, as this can potentially cause damage to the battery or the camera itself. While GoPro batteries have built-in safety features that prevent overcharging, it is still possible to overcharge the battery if you use a non-approved charging cable or charger.
To ensure that you don’t overcharge your GoPro battery, it is best to use the charging cable and charger that came with your camera, or use a third-party charging cable and charger that is approved for use with GoPro cameras. Additionally, you should avoid leaving your GoPro charging overnight or for an extended period of time after the battery has reached full capacity.

If you do notice any issues with your GoPro battery, such as swelling or overheating, stop using the battery immediately and contact GoPro customer support for assistance. Overall, while it is unlikely that overcharging your GoPro battery will cause significant damage, it is still best to take precautions to ensure that your battery and camera remain in good working order.
