With GoPro Protune, you can unleash the full creative potential of your action camera by setting it up as per your liking.

The main GoPro Protune settings include Color, White Balance, ISO Limit, and Shutter Speed.

In this guide, you’ll discover the best Protune settings for the GoPro Hero 10 Black action camera.

GoPro Hero 10 Protune Settings

If you have recently purchased a new Hero 10 Black, you may find it helpful to download the manual, which can be accessed by clicking on this link.

Here are the main GoPro Hero 10 Protune settings that you can tweak as per your preferences:

Color

Protune Color setting lets you adjust the color profile of your videos or photos shot on Hero 10. There are two modes in this setting:

  1. Vibrant (default)
  2. Natural
  3. Flat

Vibrant is the default Color mode on which the GoPro Hero 10 operates. In this mode, the camera captures photos and videos with a color-saturated profile. Natural color mode is a bit different that vibrant in the way that it captures photos and videos with a true-to-life color profile. Both these modes are great if you don’t want to edit the image in post-production.

Flat, on the other hand, gives a neutral color profile. When you choose this option, colors may appear washed off at first. However, since the Flat setting captures more details in shadows and highlights, it offers more flexibility when it comes to post-production.

Read more on color settings in the following article: Best GoPro Color Settings? [GoPro Color vs Flat].

White Balance

White Balance lets you optimize the image for cool or warm lighting conditions. This is done by adjusting the color temperature of videos and photos shot with your Hero 10.

Here are the White Balance options that you can choose from:

Auto (default), 2300K, 2800K, 3200K, 4000K, 4500K, 5500K, 6000K, 6500K, and Native

Auto, as the name suggests, sets the white balance automatically. It is the default profile on the GoPro Hero 10. Lower values mean warmer tones. Native offers a minimally color-corrected profile, and therefore, allows for more flexibility and adjustments in post-production.

ISO Minimum/Maximum

ISO Minimum/Maximum refers to the range for your GoPro’s sensitivity to light and image ‘noise’ or the degree of graininess in the image. The ISO Minimum and Maximum values range from 100 to 6400. Higher ISO values result in brighter images, but with greater noise. Lower ISO values, on the other hand, result in darker images, but with less noise. The default for ISO Maximum is 1600 for video and 3200 for photos. The default ISO Minimum is 100 for both photos and videos.

Pro Tip: To lock the ISO at a specific value, set ISO Minimum and ISO Maximum to the same values

Shutter

The Protune Shutter setting only applies to the Video, Photo, and LiveBurst modes on the GoPro Hero 10 Black. This setting determines how long the camera’s shutter stays open.

For Photos, the options are – Auto, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, and 1/2000 second.

For Video, the options depend on the fps setting. These options include – Auto, 1/fps, 1/2x fps, 1/4x fps, 1/8x fps.

The default setting is Auto, which means that the camera automatically selects the shutter speed.

Pro Tip: To reduce the amount of blur in videos and photos when using the Shutter setting, mount your camera on a tripod or other stable surface where it won’t wobble or shake.

Exposure Value Compensation (EV Comp)

Exposure Value Compensation on Hero 10 affects the brightness of your photos and videos. By adjusting this setting, you can improve image quality when shooting scenes with sharp contrasts.

Options for this setting range from -2.0 to +2.0. The default setting is -05.

Please note that for Video, this setting is available only if Shutter is set to Auto.

Sharpness

Sharpness allows you to control the quality of details captured in your video footage or photos. You can choose from three Sharpness options:

  1. High (default)
  2. Medium
  3. Low

Pro Tip: Planning on increasing sharpness during editing? Select Low for this setting.

RAW Audio

The RAW Audio setting creates a separate .wav file for your video, in addition to the standard .mp4 audio track. You can select from various levels of processing in the RAW audio track, which include:

  1. Off (default): No separate .wav file is created.
  2. Low: Applies minimal processing.
  3. Med: Applies moderate processing.
  4. High: Applies full audio processing.

Using Low is recommended if you want to apply audio processing in post-production. Med is ideal if you want to apply your own gain. Lastly, keep this setting on High if you want the processed audio without AAC encoding.

Wind Noise Reduction

The GoPro Hero 10 Black uses three microphones to capture sound. With the Wind Noise Reduction, you can customize how these microphones are used. There are three levels to choose from – Auto (default), On, and Off.

Auto is the default wind noise reduction level on Hero 10. It automatically filters out excessive wind/water noise. When you keep this setting On, the camera will filter out excessive wind noise, such as when it is mounted on a moving vehicle. It is recommended that you keep the Wind Noise Reduction Off only when the wind will not affect sound quality, such as while using the camera indoors.

So, choose the most suitable option based on where you’re shooting and what type of sound you want in your finished video.

Should I Turn Protune on or Off GoPro?

Whether you should turn Protune on or off on your GoPro camera depends on your specific shooting situation and preferences.

In general, Protune is recommended for more experienced users who want more control over their footage. With Protune turned on, you can adjust settings like color, ISO limit, exposure value, and more, giving you greater control over the look of your footage. This can be particularly useful in situations where lighting conditions are challenging, or where you want to achieve a specific aesthetic.

However, if you are a beginner or just want to quickly capture footage without having to worry about adjusting settings, you may prefer to leave Protune turned off. In this mode, your camera will automatically adjust settings like color and exposure to give you the best possible results.

Ultimately, whether you choose to turn on or off Protune depends on your experience level and the specific shooting situation. It’s always a good idea to experiment with different settings and see what works best for you.

5 GoPro Hacks for Better Videos

Here are five GoPro hacks that can help you capture better videos:

Use a polarizing filter

A polarizing filter can help reduce glare and improve color saturation in your footage, especially when filming outdoors. You can attach a polarizing filter to the front of your GoPro lens using a compatible filter mount.

Try different mounts

Experiment with different mounts to capture unique perspectives and angles. For example, you can mount your GoPro on a helmet, chest harness, or even a selfie stick for different types of shots.

Use the GoPro app for remote control

The GoPro app allows you to remotely control your camera from your smartphone or tablet, which can be especially useful for capturing shots that are hard to reach. You can also use the app to preview footage and adjust camera settings.

Shoot in slow motion

The GoPro has a range of slow-motion options that can help you capture action shots with more detail and impact. Try experimenting with different frame rates and resolutions to find the right settings for your subject.

Edit your footage

Finally, don’t forget to edit your footage to create a polished final product. You can use the GoPro app or other editing software to trim clips, add music and effects, and adjust color and exposure. With a little bit of editing, you can turn your raw footage into a professional-looking video.
