How To Choose SD Card?

Here’s what yiou should have in mind when choosing an SD card:

Size Capacity

A 128GB SD card is ideal for short trips or casual use, providing around 4 hours of 4K footage, which is plenty for most weekend adventures.

A 256GB card is a good middle-ground, offering up to 8 hours of 4K recording, great if you’re planning longer excursions without a chance to offload files.

For heavy users or extended trips, a 512GB SD card lets you capture nearly 16 hours of 4K video or tons of high-res photos—this is ideal if you want to record everything from start to finish without swapping cards.

A 1TB SD card might sounds like a great idea, but actually it’s not. If you damage it, all your footage will be gone. Instead, I’d recommend you getting two 512GB SD cards.

Speed Class

Next, you need consider write speed or speed class of the microSD card for your GoPro. Since the GoPro Hero 4 and newer cameras capture up to 4K video, the write speeds are very important to properly capture your high-resolution videos. The company recommends a minimum of Class 10, but the newer Class 10 cards may also have a UHS (Ultra high Speed) or VSC (Video Speed Class) classification. These higher speed cards work for all previous iterations of Hero and Session cameras as they are backward compatible.

Why To Format Your SD Card?

First, formatting ensures that the file system on the card is compatible with your camera or other device, which can help prevent errors and other issues. Also formatting erases any existing data on the card, which can help prevent data corruption or other issues that may arise when using a previously used card.

Finally, formatting can help optimize the card’s performance, ensuring that it operates at its maximum potential. It’s important to note that formatting a card will erase all data on it, so it’s important to back up any important files before formatting.
