Do You Really Need an External Microphone for GoPro Hero 12?

GoPro cameras are renowned for their exceptional video quality and rugged, compact design. However, their built-in microphones have garnered mixed feedback.

While the built-in audio quality is generally acceptable for everyday use, it might not meet the demands of professional applications or situations where top-notch audio is required.

The latest GoPro models, including the HERO 12, HERO 11, and HERO 10 Black, have made improvements to their microphone performance compared to earlier iterations.

They now offer better wind noise reduction and more precise audio capture. Nevertheless, they are still not good enough for vlogging, in my opinion.

By the way, if you want to elevate your overall filming experience with GoPro I recommend you to activate Protune. Find more information on how to use it: BEST GoPro Hero 12 Protune Settings [Cheat Sheet Download]

How to Connect an External Mic to Your GoPro Hero 12

Connecting an external microphone to your GoPro Hero 12 is a straightforward process, but it does require the right accessories. The Hero 12 features a USB-C port, so you’ll need an adapter that has a USB-C input and a 3.5mm microphone jack output.

Here are three options to help you get your external microphone connected and ready for high-quality audio recording:

GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter

GoPro Hero 12 Media Mod – My Choice

GoPro Media Mod (HERO13 Black/HERO12 Black/HERO11 Black/HERO10 Black/HERO9 Black) - Official GoPro Accessory
  • Built-in directional mic highlights voice audio and reduces ambient noise
  • Tough, weather-resistant construction withstands the elements
  • 2 cold-shoe mounts to attach your favorite lights, mics or LCD screens

I personally use GoPro Hero 12 Media Mod. Why? Because it has a 3.5mm microphone port, includes a build-in mic, and it gives the possibility to attach other accessories.

The Media Mod supports various types of microphones, including shotgun mics, lavalier mics, and USB mics. It even comes equipped with a built-in directional microphone, perfect for recording audio in noisy environments.

To use the Media Mod as a microphone adapter, simply plug your external microphone into the 3.5mm jack on the side of the module. The Media Mod will automatically detect the microphone and route audio through it.

Besides the microphone jack, the Media Mod also features HDMI-out and USB-C ports for connecting external displays and charging your Hero 12.

Plus, Media Mod is just perfect accessory for vlogging. If you want to know how to start out to vlog with GoPro, read: GoPro Vlog Setup: 5 Best Vlogging Kits + Vlog Tips

Which Microphone Do I Recommend?

I find all of the microphones above quite good for vlogging and adventures but, among all of them, I often like to use and recommend The Rode Wireless GO because it’s compact, easy to use, and connects seamlessly with the Rode mic app.

I’m pleased with the quality; even on the streets, it doesn’t pick up too much noise, though you can still capture the ambiance of the place.

Plus, its compact and wireless design means I can take it everywhere without worrying about it breaking or something.

A good budget-friendly alternative is the Sennheiser MKE 200. It performs well, minimizing background sound, but it’s a bit too bulky for my taste.
