GoPro Max
Released in late 2019, the GoPro Max is the second generation 360 camera from GoPro (the first one being Fusion). With Max, GoPro seeks to upend all the limitations of Fusion with a sleek, easy-to-use design and waterproof capability.
Soon after its launch, Max became quite a rage! It is still considered one of the best 360 cameras with superb video quality, easy-to-use editing app, and excellent design. To top it all, Max has that premium feel similar to the other GoPro cameras.

Fast forward to October 2020, the Insta360 ONE X2 – the follow-up to the popular One X – got released. It offers an even more rugged design, improved color, and a bumped-up processing power.
With horizon leveling, the stabilization on ONE X2 is better than ever on any Insta360 camera. What’s more – the Insta360 ONE X2 matches up (& even exceeds) the parameters to the GoPro Max, making it one of the best 360 cameras around.

Feature-Wise Comparison
Here’s the detailed feature-wise comparison for Insta360 ONE X2 vs GoPro Max:
Design
While both 360 action cameras are rugged and are designed to withstand even the toughest conditions, they look very different from each other. The GoPro Max 360 is a square-shaped camera with a large touch screen and two lenses on each side. The Insta360 One X2, on the other hand, is shaped like a candy bar with two lenses protruding at the top, and a round touch screen in the center. The screen size of Max is larger than One X2 which makes it easier to use.
Both cameras are designed to be used underwater (up to 10m). When it comes to mounting design, the One X2 features a standard 1/4 inch mount whereas the Max features GoPro’s trademark mount design that’s compatible with numerous accessories.
Video Quality
As you must have noticed in the specs table given above, the video specifications of the One X2 and Max are very similar. Both cameras can shoot videos at 5.7K/5.6K 360 resolution at 30fps and 3K at 60fps. When these videos are reframed, you get a 1080p video. When it comes to non-360 mode, both cameras shoot 1440p shots at 30fps and 1080p ones at 60fps.
However, identical video specs don’t necessarily translate to identical video quality. Upon usage, I felt that the video shot on the One X2 looks good a bit noisier in dark areas. In contrast, the GoPro Max performs better in dark.
Photo Quality
Like the video, the photo specs of both cameras are also quite similar. GoPro Max has a photo resolution of 18-megapixels. At 18.4-megapixels, One X2 has a slightly better resolution. But, such a slight (0.4 MP) increase in megapixels doesn’t really make much of a difference.
However, when it comes to photography options, the Insta360 One X2 trumps. It has multiple photo modes, including Standard, HDR, Burst Interval, Night Shot, Pureshot, Instant Pano. Plus, the One X2 can shoot HDR photos and RAW images. In comparison, the GoPro Max has minimal photography options. Therefore, when it comes to photography, the One X2 is the better of the two.
Stabilization
Both cameras feature epic stabilization technology that makes even the extreme action footage look super smooth and shake-free. GoPro calls its stabilization tech Hypersmooth 2.0, while for Insta360, it is Flowstate.
Practically, both versions work exceptionally well and you can’t really choose one over the other.
App
When it comes to 360 cameras, the app plays a really important role because that’s where the stitching happens. So, the experience while using the app should be pleasant and fluid. Both GoPro and Insta360 have great apps that let you create some wonderful videos.
The Insta360 mobile app is packed with some exciting features, and you can edit your videos without having to transfer the files to your phone. That’s not the case with the GoPro app. It isn’t as feature-packed as its Insta360 counterpart. Also, you need to transfer all your files to your phone before editing, which may be frustrating for many!
Insta360 One X2 vs GoPro Max, What is Better?
It’s pretty clear from the comparison given above that here we’re talking about two cameras that are very similar in all aspects. Both the cameras are primarily 360-degree action cameras that let you shoot normal videos using just one lens. But, if you really have to choose one out of the two, then you should make a choice based on which feature matters more to you.
Since the GoPro Max tends to shoot better videos with lesser noise, you should probably go for it if that’s what matters to you a lot. However, if you want a camera with better photography features and a better app, then the Insta360 One X is the one for you.
