If you’re someone who wants to stop drones from flying over your house, you should learn the methods to do so.
There are both legal and illegal ways, and we’ll explore both in this article.
In this post, you’ll also find out how to detect if a drone is nearby, and I’ll answer some of the most common questions about drones and security.
How to Stop Drones From Flying over Your House
Here are the ways to stop a drone from flying over your house:
Legal Ways
Use Signs to Mark Your House as a Drone-Free Area
If you don’t want drone pilots to fly their drones in the airspace above your property, then making your own signs that indicate the same can be highly effective. Hopefully, after looking at these signs, drone pilots will pay heed to your warning. However, when you make these signs, make sure that you don’t claim that your property is a “no drone zone”. It will be inaccurate as per the FAA UAS regulations, and you may be asked to remove the signage.
File a Complaint
If the drone operator is violating any law as outlined by the FAA, such as if it lands on your house or is flying above 400 feet (120m), then you can report that is breaking FAA rules and regulations. This can be done by contacting your local Flight Standards District Office.
Find your local Flight Standards District Office here: Flight Standards District Offices (FSDO) (faa.gov)
Please note that simply being bothered by a drone over your property isn’t enough grounds to file a complaint.
Ask Drone Pilot to Stop Flying Over Your Property
A few amateur drone pilots may not realize that their drone use over your house is bothering you. So, politely requesting that the person does not fly the drone over your property is a great idea. Unfortunately, a drone pilot does not legally have to comply with your request. But, if you ask nicely, there are high chances that they will avoid flying their drone over your property in the future.

Illegal Ways
Please note that it’s illegal for you to forcibly remove the drone from the area, even if it’s above your property. Such an action carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison. So, while there are ways to forcibly stop drones from flying over your house (which I’m going to explain below), I suggest that you NEVER use them and take the law into your own hands.
Use an Anti-Drone Drone
An anti-drone drone is a relatively safer way of bringing down a rogue drone. Such a drone uses nets to capture and bring down a drone without destroying it. This is achieved with the help of a 3×2 meter net that the drone releases to intercept and capture the unauthorized drone and bring it down safely.
Use Anti-Drone Jammers
Using an anti-drone jammer simple way to disable a drone on your property. Jamming the communication of the drone with its controller allows you to either land the drone safely or send it back if the drone has a return-to-home function. All the recent DJI drones feature a return-to-home function.
Use a Gun
The most obvious yet riskiest way to stop the drone from flying over your property is to shoot it down with a gun. However, this method isn’t for common people; it’s only meant to be used by law enforcement agencies in extreme cases. Under FAA laws, the destruction of an aircraft is a felony offense that carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Use Anti-Drone Lasers
The anti-drone lasers work by blinding the drone camera. It does so by overloading the drone camera’s sensor with too much light. For this, all you need is a low-powered laser pointer and good aim. But, be cautious. It’s illegal to shine lasers into the sky because that might accidentally blind an airplane pilot. So, exercise caution when playing around with lasers like this.
Legal Aspects
The short answer is Yes. It’s legal for a drone to fly over your house, provided that the drone pilot obeys the Federal Aviation Administration’s rules for Unmanned Aircraft Systems.
Here are the rules:
- Drones cannot fly over stadiums & sporting events, airports, government-secured airspaces, and the greater Washington, D.C. area.
- Drones are allowed to fly only during daylight in uncontrolled airspace below 400 feet (120 m).
- The drone must not exceed a speed of 100 miles (160 km) per hour.
- A drone cannot take pictures and videos of you without your consent.
If you find that a drone is flying over your property and violating any of the above-mentioned rules, or taking pictures and videos of you without your consent, then it is violating the FAA’s privacy guidelines. However, obtaining evidence that the drone is indeed taking footage of you is incredibly difficult.
How Do You Tell if a Drone is Nearby?
There are several ways to tell if a drone is nearby:
- Listen for the sound: Drones make a distinct buzzing sound when they are flying, so listening for this sound can help you identify if a drone is nearby.
- Look for the drone: Drones are visible in the sky, so if you see an object flying that resembles a drone, it is likely that there is a drone nearby.
- Use a drone detector app: Some apps are designed to detect the presence of drones by using the camera and sensors on your phone. There are several drone detector apps available for smartphones, such as DroneWatcher, Drone Detector, and AirMap. These apps use your smartphone’s camera and sensors to detect the presence of drones in the surrounding area. Some apps also provide real-time tracking of drone activity, which can be helpful in determining the location of the drone operator. These apps are generally designed for use in public areas or events where drones are not allowed, such as airports or concerts. It’s important to note that these apps may not be 100% accurate and should be used in conjunction with other methods for detecting drones.
- Look for warning signs: If you are in a public area or near an event, there may be signs warning about the use of drones. If you see these signs, it is likely that a drone is nearby.
- Look for the operator: If you see someone operating a remote control, it is possible that they are controlling a nearby drone.
Can Drones See Through Walls?
Drones cannot see through walls, at least not in the way that many people might think. While some drones do come equipped with cameras that can see through certain materials such as fabric or thin plastics, they cannot see through solid objects like walls made of concrete or brick.
However, some specialized drones that are designed for military or law enforcement purposes may be equipped with sensors such as thermal imaging cameras or ground-penetrating radar that can detect the presence of objects behind walls or underground. These types of drones are not commonly available to the general public and are typically used for specific applications such as search and rescue missions or military operations.
It’s important to note that using drones to spy on people or invade their privacy is illegal in many places, so it’s important to respect the privacy of others when operating a drone.
Can You Block a Drone Signal?
Yes, it is possible to block a drone signal using specialized equipment called drone jammers or drone blockers. These devices emit radio frequency signals that disrupt the communication between the drone and its controller, effectively blocking the drone’s ability to receive commands or transmit video and other data.
It is important to note that using drone jammers or blockers may be illegal in some areas, as they can interfere with other types of communication signals, such as those used by emergency services or air traffic control. In addition, some countries have strict regulations governing the use of such devices, and unauthorized use may result in fines or even criminal charges.
It’s also worth noting that while drone jammers can be effective at blocking a drone’s signal, they may not be able to physically stop the drone from flying or cause it to crash. Some drones are equipped with features such as obstacle avoidance sensors or autonomous flight modes that can allow them to continue flying even if the signal from the controller is disrupted.
