5 Tips for Shooting GoPro Ski Videos
Here are 5 helpful tips for you to use while shooting your ski rides:
Best camera settings
All the latest GoPros are usually well equipped to handle rapid skiing shots, and give excellent results when you’ve set the camera to auto exposure on a bright, sunny day. However, in heavily overcast conditions, you may find that you need to increase the exposure a little.
Here are the camera settings that we recommend for shooting your ski action along the slopes:
- Resolution: 1080p – 2.7K
- Frame Rate: 120fps – 240fps
- Angle: Wide

Use of polarizing filters
Using an ND (Neutral Density) or Polarizing Filter with your action-cam can really help you manage the extreme brightness on a sunny day resulting in an overexposed White-Out while shooting in the snow. These filters cut down on snow reflections and add texture to the snow for increased depth – A real bonus, since the GoPro tends to wash out in overly bright conditions. So, for shooting in snowy conditions, a polarizing Filter is a solid investment!
Here’s the PolarPro Polarizing/Neutral Density (Venture Kit) GoPro Filters that we strongly recommend.
- Engineered specifically for the Hero6 / Hero5 Black camera
- Perfect starter set for the aspiring film maker
- Includes Polarizer, Neutral Density, and Graduated ND filters

Keep Your GoPro Warm
Using your GoPro in cold weather seriously affects the battery life. It reduces drastically during winter or cold weather conditions. In fact, not just GoPro, all batteries seem to not perform well in cold temperatures. So, you must keep the camera and batteries warm when possible. This can be done by using hand warmers in the pocket where you keep both the camera and spare batteries. A small electric hand warmer can also be used to keep batteries warm.

Spare batteries
As you’re likely to be out on the slopes all day, always remember to pack an additional battery or two. After all, you don’t want to miss out on the last jump of the day because your battery is dead! And since you know that cold weather has an adverse effect on the condition and charge of the battery, ensure that you carry your spare batteries in an inner pocket so they stay warm and nice.
Use Voice Commands
The latest GoPro models – GoPro Hero 12, 11, 10 and 9 Black and GoPro Max – all have the voice command feature which lets you control various GoPro functions by just speaking a few dedicated commands to your camera. It can be really useful on the slopes to start and stop recording and control your camera easily, while is on your helmet for instance.
