For cameras, especially DSLRs and action cameras, the speed of microSD cards matters a lot. Fast memory cards are a must for optimal performance and smooth video recording in high-resolution. In this article, I’ve compiled a list of 7 Fastest microSD Cards for 4K Cameras in 2021.

Why Do You Need a Fast SD Card for Your Camera?

Let’s take this as an example: You’re recording a high-resolution 4K or even 8K video with your camera, but the microSD card you’re using with it is too slow. In such scenario you may end up facing unexpected hassles like random stopping of video recording or other errors. So, it’s really important that you use a memory card that is compatible with your particular camera model and that it has an adequate speed to ensure smooth and hassle-free video recording.

But what’s an “adequate speed”? To know about it, you should have a basic understanding of the SD Card Speed Class standards. Have a look at the section below.

All You Need to Know About SD Card Speed Class Standards

Recording video requires a constant minimum write speed to avoid ‘frame drop’ or video recording errors while you’re recording. A fast SD card ensures a safe storage of your videos and a smooth playback. The SD Association has defined various Speed Class standards. This is mainly useful for camcorders, video recorders and other devices with video recording capabilities.

There are three kinds of SD Card speed indications:

  1. Speed Class: includes Class 2, 4, 6 and 10.
  2. UHS Speed Class: includes UHS Speed Class 1 (U1) and UHS Speed Class 3 (U3).
  3. Video Speed Class: includes V6, V10, V30, V60 and V90.

These speed classes are labelled on the front side of each SD memory card. The labelling is in the form of little numbers with a circle, a U shape, or a V shape. The manufacturers use these “classes” to determine the speed of the memory card.

Have a look at the graphic below to understand the kind of speeds offered by each speed class.

It means that it will work at highest UHS-I speed if your camera doesn’t support the UHS-II SD cards.

But, Lexar Professional 1800x is available in only two storage capacity options: 64GB and 128GB, which may be disappointing if you want a microSD card with higher storage capacity.

Word of Advice

While speed is an important aspect while choosing a microSD card for your camera, it’s not always true that the fastest card is necessarily the best card for your needs. There are other factors that matter too, which may include price, availability and compatibility with your camera model. So, before buying any memory card, I’d suggest you to double check the compatibility of your camera with any SD card that you may want to buy.
