The truth, as frustrating as it might be, is that ‘it depends.’

Why Do I Use a GoPro?
The GoPro is capable of some truly remarkable feats, but it might not be the one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler.
With the market now flooded with action cameras like the Insta360 Ace Pro, boasting AI tools, or the DJI Actie 4, which comes at a more attractive price point, it’s understandable to feel a bit overwhelmed by choices.
Having used a GoPro for nearly eight years as an adventurous filmmaker, I’m excited to share my honest insights.
I’ve been using GoPro for nearly 8 years now, and I am not ready to switch this camera for another one. Initially, I bought it when I quit my corporate job and started to travel. I gifted myself this sabbatical year and set off to Southeast Asia – Thailand, Bali, Philippines.
I needed a camera that would be small, as I didn’t have much space in my luggage and I was moving quite a lot, a camera that would be rugged as I was riding a motorbike in dirt and under the rain, and a camera that would withstand underwater – as I started to learn diving and eventually became a dive master. I just wanted to capture all my adventures during this year. In that era, the only camera that could do all of it, to cover all my needs, was a GoPro.
So, I went for it. I bought a GoPro Hero 6 Zwart, and it was the best choice I could have ever made. Now that time has passed and technology advanced, I can still feel even my old GoPro Hero 6 does quite a good job. Just look at the picture I snapped during my diving in Philippines.
Now there are so many action cameras on the market that can do more or less the same job (but not to a 100%) but for less money, but I refuse to change.
I guess because I’m emotionally attached to GoPro, and even though I do use Insta360 X2 for 360 videos on the slopes and while vlogging, GoPro remains my favorite.
Now the question comes: When do you need to buy a GoPro? What need should you have so GoPro would be the only camera to cover them?
When To Get a GoPro?
To decide whether or not to get a GoPro, ask yourself some simple questions:
- Are you planning to film in extreme conditions like mountain biking, skiing, skating, or underwater?
- Is having the best stabilization important to you, or is it not a major concern?
- Do you want to be able to film onderwater?
- Do you want a rugged camera that will be able to film in the rain and in the dirt?
If the answer is yes, then you’d better get a GoPro!

As every camera, GoPro has its drawbacks. So, when you’d better not to get a GoPro?
For Still Photos
While GoPro takes decent photos, your smartphone or a DSLR might serve you better for traditional photography, offering higher quality images and more control over settings.
360-Degree Videos
If 360 videos are your main interest, the GoPro Max is an option, but the Insta360 X3 might give you more bang for your buck with similar or better features at a lower price.
Occasional Use
If you’re not frequently engaging in activities that require a rugged, waterproof camera, consider a more budget-friendly camera or simply use your smartphone.
Low-Light Conditions
While GoPro is great for the daylight, The newest Insta360 Ace Pro has better low-light performance.
You’re on a Budget
If you’re watching your spending, a GoPro might not be the best choice for you, as it’s among the pricier options in the action camera market. There are more budget-friendly alternatives available like DJI Actie 4 that still offer good quality video and useful features for those looking to save.

Should You Get a GoPro?
To sum it up, if I had only used a DSLR or smartphone, I would have missed capturing so many precious moments in detail. Often, they would have been left at home or in the car, deemed too fragile or cumbersome for spontaneous use or to hand over to someone else.
Many of us want to document our lives and the adventures we cherish. This is where the GoPro truly excels. It’s the camera that guarantees you’ll return from an event with enough footage to craft a memorable home movie. All it takes is a simple push of the record button.
If you’re ready to invest a bit of money, then go for it, get a GoPro. In case if not, there are another great alternatives like Insta360 AcePro of DJI Actie 4.
