El DJI Osmo Pocket is a wonderful handheld 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer with an integrated camera. The compact size of this gimbal ensures that you can pull it out from your pocket and start shooting video in a matter of seconds! Therefore you can shoot with it while you’re skiing or riding a bike without the need of mounting it anywhere.
However, when it comes to adjusting the camera angle, it’s a bit complicated using the on-screen controls of Osmo Pocket. You can only adjust the camera angle vertically. If you want to adjust a horizontal angle, you’ll need to connect your phone. That’s where the need for a Controller Wheel arises. It comes as a part of the DJI Osmo Pocket Expansion Kit, which also features some other useful accessories, including the Osmo Pocket Wireless Module, Accessory Mount Adapter, and a 32GB Samsung microSD card.
In this post, you’ll learn all about the DJI Osmo Pocket Expansion Kit – our full review of all the components included in it, and whether it’s worth buying in 2021.
DJI Osmo Pocket Expansion Kit: Full Review
Here’s our full review of the DJI Osmo Expansion Kit. In this section, we’ll look at all the components included in the kit individually.
DJI Osmo Pocket Controller Wheel
El Controller Wheel is a highly useful accessory for the DJI Osmo Pocket. It slots into the accessory mount just above the buttons on the gimbal, which means that you can only use it when the camera is not connected to a smartphone. But, you don’t even need to use your phone when you have this awesome accessory, because it makes controlling the camera a lot more convenient!
The Controller Wheel comprises a jog wheel that lets you easily move the camera. It’s the main part of this accessory. Then, there’s a switch just below the wheel that lets you make horizontal and vertical movements. Towards the right, there are two buttons. The left one lets you scroll quickly through the gimbal control options – Follow, Tilt locked, FPV (first-person view) mode. The right button allows you to flip the camera around with just a single press.
DJI Osmo Pocket Wireless Module
The DJI Osmo Pocket Wireless Module features a USB-C connection that goes into the gimbal’s USB-C port, thus drawing energy from Osmo Pocket’s battery. When it’s powered up, you’ll see a small red light on it. It turns green when the module is connected to a smartphone. At the back of the Wireless Module, there’s a USB-C port that lets you connect the gimbal to the power supply. However, please note that you can not connect a mic via this port. It’s only for charging.
Pairing the Wireless Module with a smartphone is super easy! You just need to use the DJI Mimo app. Once your smartphone is paired, you can quickly control the Osmo Pocket remotely via the app. The app lets you perform several functions, including adjustment of the camera angle or changing settings. You can also download videos and stills to your phone without having to make a hard connection.
DJI Osmo Pocket Accessory Mount Adapter
El Accessory Mount Adapter is meant to mount the DJI Osmo Pocket in GoPro-type mounts. The adapter clips around the screen of Osmo Pocket. However, please note that you can not connect the Controller Wheel to the accessory port.
In some cases, you need to mount the Osmo Pocket flat with the camera tilted up if you want to view the scene ahead. Therefore, the range of upward stabilization is much more restricted than normal. Also, I felt that the clip lock is a bit tough to open.
Samsung EVO Plus 32GB MicroSD Card
Along with the other accessories, you also get a Samsung EVO Plus 32GB MicroSD Card in the DJI Osmo Pocket Expansion Kit. This one is definitely a reliable memory card. It’s super-fast and can be used to shoot 4K videos with the Osmo Pocket without any issues.
However, please note that if you record in 4K, the 32GB storage capacity will offer only about half an hour of footage. If that’s not enough for you, you’ll need to add a larger microSD card to your kit.
Verdict: Is the DJI Osmo Pocket Expansion Kit Worth Buying?
The DJI Pocket Expansion Kit is surely a wonderful addition to the gimbal. While you can capture some great shots even without any addition to DJI Osmo Pocket, the accessories included in the expansion kit make it a lot more convenient to use. The controller wheel makes it far easier to control the movement of the gimbal. The wireless module, on the other hand, makes your Osmo Pocket more stable and allows you to use your smartphone to control the camera via the DJI Mimo app. You don’t need to physically connect the camera.
Therefore, if you want to enhance the quality of your shots, buying the DJI Osmo Pocket Expansion Kit is a wonderful decision. Another good reason why you should buy this expansion kit is that it comes for significantly less than the combined separate prices of the Controller Wheel and Wireless Module. So, the fact that you effectively get two additional accessories – the Accessory Mount and a high-quality microSD card – along with the wireless module and controller wheel at a lesser price than the combined price of the latter two makes the DJI Osmo Pocket Expansion Kit a must-buy!
