GoPro Time Lapse is a great feature which turns long events into short, shareable videos by taking multiple photos at set intervals. All you have to do is press the Shutter button on GoPro to start recording, and then press it again to stop.
The GoPro Hero 8 Black has three Time Lapse modes: Time Warp 2.0, Time Lapse and Night Lapse.
In this article you are going to learn all about GoPro Hero 8 Time Lapse modes, including best time lapse settings and a few filming tips to turn your GoPro Time-Lapses into epic videos.
GoPro Hero 8 Time Lapse Modes
Qui ci sono three time-lapse modes that you get in the GoPro Hero 8 Black:
1. TimeWarp 2.0 (Default)
An advanced version of GoPro Time Warp, the Time Warp 2.0 is the default time lapse setting on the GoPro Hero 8 Black. This preset is for you if you want to capture a time lapse video while your camera is moving. It lets you speed up time while using the Hero 8 Black’s amazing HyperSmooth 2.0 image stabilization technology. With Time Warp 2.0, you’ll be able to capture ultra smooth time lapse video while you’re on the move. This makes it perfect for mountain bike runs, hikes, and more.
As default, Time Warp 2.0 captures 1080p HD video with the Wide angle lens of your Hero 8. It automatically adjusts your capture speed for the best results. If you want to put a special focus on a few interesting moments in the video, you also get the option to tap for slowing down a particular scene to real time and then tap again to speed it back up.
Time Lapse Video
This preset is for those who want to capture time lapse video when the Hero 8 Black camera is mounted and still. It is a great mode to shoot sunrise/sunsets, horizon, clouds, street scenes, and similar shots that involve shooting for a long period of time.
When you select the ‘Time Lapse’ setting, your GoPro Hero 8 Black records 1080p video (as default) with the Wide digital lens while capturing one shot every 0.5 seconds.
Time Lapse Foto
Alternatively, you can also use foto in time lapse format. For this, you need to simply go to Formato in settings and choose Foto. The photo format takes a continuous series of photos (as standard .jpg or RAW files) at set intervals. You can then look through all of your photos and find the best shots later.
3. Night Lapse
As the name suggests, the Night Lapse preset is meant to capture time lapse video in dark and low light conditions with your Hero 8 Black. It automatically adjusts the camera’s shutter speed to let more light in and picks the interval that will give you the best results.
GoPro Hero 8 Night Lapse shoots 1080p video with the Wide digital lens as default. Such shots are strictly for those occasions when your camera is stationary and held by a mount or a tripod.
Night Lapse Foto
Just like time lapse photos, you can also capture Night Lapse photos with the GoPro Hero 8 Black. All you need to do is – go to Formato in settings and choose Foto to capture a series of photos at set intervals, out of which you can select the best ones later on.
GoPro Hero 8 TimeLapse Settings
Once you’ve selected the preset you’d like for your time lapse shot, here are the steps you need to follow to set a time lapse on the GoPro Hero 8 Black:
Step 1: Premere il tasto “Power/Mode” button until the camera symbol starts flashing.
Step 2: Premere il tasto shutter-release button. That’s it! Your GoPro will start shooting every two seconds (as per the default setting).
Step 3: Now, if you want to change the shooting interval, press “Power/Mode” button again until the “SET” icon appears. Press the shutter-release button to enter the menu and use the “Power/Mode” button to navigate through the menu.
Step 4: Scroll to “P2” on the display and use the shutter-release button to select one of the other options as per your preference: P5, P10, P30, P60.
Step 5: To confirm your choice, press the “Power/Mode” button once more.
With this, you’re ready to shoot an amazing time-lapse video with the GoPro Hero 8 Black.
Choosing the TimeWarp Speed Manually
While the GoPro Hero 8 Black automatically adjusts your time warp capture speed for the best results, you can also choose it manually. It is recommended that you select a lower speed (2x or 5x) for short activities. For longer activities, go for higher speeds (10x, 15x, or 30x). But, if you’re still unsure, it’s best to leave speed on Auto (default) to let your GoPro automatically adjust the speed based on motion, scene detection, and lighting.
The recommended speed that you should set depends upon the activity you’re shooting. Here are the speed recommendations to create quality TimeWarp video for different activities:
- Driving through a scenic route: 2x-5x
- Hiking & Exploring: 10x
- Running or Mountain-Biking: 15-30x
Choosing the Time Interval
Time Interval refers to how often your camera captures a frame of video or takes a photo. When you’re shooting in the Time Lapse video mode, choose shorter intervals for quick activities and longer intervals for extended activities. When you’re shooting a night lapse, it’s good to choose short intervals for scenes with a lot of movement and somewhat more light. For night lapse scenes with little or no movement or light, you must choose longer intervals.
TimeLapse VS TimeWarp
The main difference between GoPro Hero 8 Black’s Time Warp 2.0 and Time Lapse is that Time Warp 2.0 is stabilized with HyperSmooth 2.0. This mode is meant to be used for longer, moving videos. It is useful for activities like skiing, running, riding, motorcycling, snowboarding, etc.
TimeLapse...d'altra parte, isn’t stabilized. It is to be used for stationary videos, such as with the GoPro attached to a tripod. You can use it to shoot time lapse videos of scenes such as the horizon, clouds, sunrise, sunset etc.
Consider using a large memory card and some extra batteries if you shoot a time-lapse with your GoPro.
After all, shooting a time lapse requires recording for long time durations which fills up the GoPro’s memory card quickly and drains the battery.
