GoPro Hero 7 Review

GoPro Hero 7 Black

Now, let’s shift our focus to the dependable GoPro Hero 7. It would be a solid choice from GoPro due to its commendable features.

However, since it has been discontinued, finding it in stock can be difficult as it would come from existing inventory. Alternatively, you might consider buying it second-hand.

With its GP1 processor, it delivers decent performance, respectable resolution, and reliable stabilization. Get ready for action in 4K/60p, 2.7K/120p, and 1080p/240p, all powered by a 12 MP sensor that delivers clear and vibrant visuals.

The HyperSmooth stabilization keeps things steady in most situations, and there’s a rear screen for framing and adjusting settings.

One thing to note, though, it doesn’t work with GoPro Mods, so no extra accessories here. On the bright side, it’s waterproof up to 33 feet, has a removable battery for about 1.5 hours of action, and supports live streaming up to 720p.

The GoPro Hero 7 is your go-to option for a straightforward, budget-friendly action camera that still delivers quality. It’s perfect for casual users, newcomers to action cameras, hobbyists, and those looking for a fun camera experience.

Plus, it way more economic, lighter and more compact than the GoPro Hero 12 – a definite advantage for some users.

GoPro Hero 12 vs GoPro Hero 7: Detailed Comparison

Here I’ll review and compare the main specs and features of each of this cameras:

Processor

Let’s kick things off with the brains behind the operation. The GoPro Hero 12 boasts the GP2 processor, while the Hero 7 runs on the GP1.

gopro hero 10 vs gopro hero 8 processor

What’s the difference? Well, the Hero 12 takes the lead in terms of speed and overall performance.

You’ll notice snappier responsiveness and smoother operations, making it a winner for those who crave fast-paced action.

Photo Resolution

For the photography enthusiasts among us, resolution matters. The Hero 12 strides confidently into this arena with a mighty 27 MP sensor.

This means it’s adept at capturing photos with exceptional detail and color accuracy. In contrast, the Hero 7 holds its own with a respectable 12 MP sensor, providing good quality images but not quite reaching the Hero 12’s level of photographic finesse.

Video Resolution

When it’s time to hit the record button, the Hero 12 shines brightly. It offers an array of impressive video options, including 5.3K at 60 frames per second, 4K at 120 frames per second, and 2.7K at 240 frames per second. These settings are perfect for capturing those high-speed adventures or stunning time-lapses.

The Hero 7, while not far behind, features video capabilities like 4K at 60 frames per second, 2.7K at 120 frames per second, and 1080p at 240 frames per second.

Stabilization

Ever had shaky footage ruin your epic video? Both the Hero 12 and Hero 7 feature GoPro’s legendary HyperSmooth technology. But here’s the kicker – the Hero 12 takes it up a notch with HyperSmooth 6.0.

hypersmooth 6.0

What does that mean? It means your footage will remain buttery smooth, even if you’re hurtling down a mountainside or catching waves in the ocean.

Live Streaming

For those who love sharing their exploits in real-time, the Hero 12 is the champion. It supports live streaming at up to 1080p, offering crystal-clear quality for your audience.

The Hero 7 doesn’t lag far behind, with support for live streaming up to 720p. So, whether you’re sharing with friends or building an online following, both cameras have you covered.

Screen Sizes

Framing the perfect shot and checking your settings is a breeze with a well-sized screen.

The Hero 12 comes equipped with a 2.27-inch rear screen and a 1.4-inch front screen. This dual-screen setup gives you more control and flexibility when framing your shots or navigating settings.

gopro hero 12 black

The Hero 7, in comparison, offers only one 2-inch rear screen – still handy, but not quite as roomy.

Battery Capacity

Longer adventures call for more battery power. The Hero 12 steps up to the plate with a robust 1720 mAh Enduro battery and allows you to film up to 155 min at 1080p.

The Hero 7, while respectable, features a 1220 mAh battery, that means more than twice less battery life.

So, if you’re planning marathon shoots or extended journeys, the Hero 12 has the edge.

Waterproof Depth

Both cameras share a common trait, being waterproof up to 33 feet. This capability makes them suitable for underwater adventures without the need for additional protective housing.

Mod Compatibility

One area where the Hero 12 excels is its compatibility with GoPro Mods, like Media Mod, Light Mod, etc., expanding its functionality with various accessories.

  • Max HyperSmooth delivers unbreakable video stabilization in all video modes

The Hero 7, unfortunately, lacks this feature, limiting your accessory options.

Price

Last but not least, let’s talk about the elephant in the room – the price. The GoPro Hero 12 is the flagship model, and with its top-tier features, it comes with a higher price tag.

On the other hand, the Hero 7 come cheaper but it’s hard to find it available as it is no longer being manufactured. Alternative would be to get it used.

Should You Upgrade?

I personally use the GoPro Hero 12, and I can vouch that it’s one of the best action cameras out there right now.

With its top-tier 27 MP sensor, it captures breathtaking photos and videos up to 5.3K at 60fps. Plus, its 1720 mAh battery ensures it stays charged during long adventures.

However, if you’re eyeing a more budget-friendly option, the GoPro Hero 7 was once a popular pick. It has a decent 12 MP sensor and can shoot videos in 4K at 60fps.

If you already own the Hero 7 and don’t use your camera frequently, it doesn’t make sense to invest $400 to upgrade from the Hero 7 to the Hero 12.

But, there’s a catch: the Hero 7 has been discontinued. While it comes with a lower price tag, finding one can be a bit of a challenge. So, if you want to buy a new action camera, Hero 7 is not a good choice.
