Insta360 One R: Our Review

Launched in March 2020, the unique modular camera by insta360 – the One R consists of three blocks – one-thirds of it is the battery, the second block is the screen plus controls, and the last part includes the lens and sensor.

Essentially, you have three cameras in the twin edition of One R. The first one is a 360-degree camera, just like the GoPro Max. The second one is the standard (linear) 4K camera. Lastly, you also have a camera with a one-inch sensor. One great feature about this camera that needs a mention is the Invisible Selfie Stick Effect. This feature makes your selfie stick automatically disappear in your edit so you can capture easy aerial angles and unique third-person perspectives with a flick of the wrist!

Overall, if you want the versatility of a good 4K action camera along with the option of turning it into a 360-degree camera, then the One R – Twin Edition is definitely a great choice for you.

Insta360 One R: Features

Here’s the full information about the main features of the insta360 One R:

Design

Even with a modular design, insta360 succeeds in making the One R a successful compact action camera that’s super sturdy too. The camera is tiny – it’s almost the same size as the GoPro Hero 10 Black. While you may, sometimes, feel that there’s no tough locking mechanism to keep the control block and camera lens part together, when you clip the battery base at the bottom, the One R feels sufficiently tough and rigid.

Switching lenses is also super-easy. You simply need to unclip the battery, pull the lens off and slot it in your other module. It just takes around 15-20 seconds! However, when it comes to water resistance, the One R meets the IPX8 standard. It means that you shouldn’t take the camera along while snorkeling. For that, you’ll need to invest in a separate diving case by insta360.

Image Quality & Stabilization

As you must be aware by now, the One R can pull off both 360-degree shots as well as standard 4K shots. Let’s start with the 4K wide-angle camera. When used alongside the GoPro Hero 10 Black in 4K resolution, the sharpness of the image and the effectiveness of the FlowState stabilization on the One R seemed to fall short. However, if you look at it independently (without comparing it to GoPro Hero 10), the 4K footage captured on the insta360 One R is good enough!

To be able to shoot your amazing 4k shots you’ll need to have a speedy SD card with a storage size of no less than 32GB.

When it comes to 360-degree shots, the 360-degree module on One R is capable of shooting at up to 5.7K resolution / 30 frames per second. Overall, the stitching part and stabilization are both excellent, just like the GoPro Max. But, when you shoot in lower light, the results are a bit underwhelming.

Audio

The Insta360 One R features two microphones, and so far, I’ve felt perfectly happy with the mic quality of this camera. Moreover, insta360 also makes it convenient to plug in your own microphone. You just need to get a Mic Adapter cable to connect a 3.5mm microphone to the camera’s USB-C port.

Battery Life

The standard 1150mAh battery of insta360 One R lets you shoot 5.7K footage (30fps) for around 70 minutes. Although it’s not too great, it’s what you would expect from most action cameras. Battery recharge takes just over an hour.

Software

You can easily export your One R shots through the mobile app or the Insta360 Studio app. The experience of editing your 360-degree videos is quite similar to what you experience with GoPro. You can take HDR and non-HDR photos, capture a Time Lapse-style video and use four additional fields of view with the 4K camera. In addition, the One R camera also has some fun extra modes.

Is the insta360 One R Twin Edition Worth it?

Overall, the insta360 One R – Twin Edition is a great attempt by the company of pulling off a modular camera that succeeds in being a good 4K camera as well as a 360-degree camera. Even though the shots captured by the standard 4K camera don’t quite match up when compared to the GoPro Hero 10 Black, but then you’re also getting a great 360-degree camera alongside the standard camera.

What’s more, the image quality of the shots captured by its 360-degree lens is no less even when compared to the GoPro Max, which by the way can only pull off up to 1440p linear shots, unlike the 4K capability of the One R.

So, if you’re someone who wants this unique combination of a 4K linear camera plus a 360-degree camera, then you should definitely go for the insta360 One R.

But, for those who are not bothered with the 360-degree capability, and only want a good action camera that offers high-quality shots, there are better alternatives around – the GoPro Hero 10 Black, for instance.
