Pointwise Comparison

Here’s a pointwise comparison of insta360 GO 3 vs GO 2:

Design

The insta360 GO 2 impresses with its charging case solution, incorporating a remote control and mini tripod. It features flip-out legs that allow it to function as a tripod, but they may not be the sturdiest option.

The case also includes a 1/4-20 tripod thread, enabling compatibility with various camera mounts.

insta360 GO 3

The GO 3, on the other hand, takes the design concept to the next level with its Action Pod.

This charging case transforms the GO 3 into a traditional action camera, complete with a touchscreen LCD for framing shots and adjusting settings. The wireless viewfinder enables remote framing and settings adjustment while the camera is mounted.

The screen can also flip vertically, catering to low-angle shots and vlogging-style recording.

Image Quality

When it comes to image quality, there are some notable differences between the insta360 GO 3 and GO 2. The GO 3 takes the lead by offering higher-resolution video recording capabilities.

It can shoot up to 2.7K, whereas the GO 2 is limited to 1440p.

The GO 3 has undergone software tweaks to enhance image processing, resulting in less graininess and slightly improved dynamic range compared to the GO 2 in most situations.

The GO 3 also provides more control over the image appearance to suit your preferences. It offers different levels of sharpening that can be adjusted through the Action Pod menu.

This is a welcome feature as the default sharpening on the GO 2 tends to be quite aggressive. Moreover, the GO 3 offers a wider range of picture profiles or filters to choose from.

While the GO 2 only offers standard, vivid, and LOG profiles, the GO 3 expands the options with profiles specifically tailored for biking, snow, night scenes, urban environments, and more.

Audio Capabilities

In terms of audio capabilities, both cameras have their limitations, but the GO 3 stands out with dual microphones, allowing for stereo recording.

While the improvement in audio quality is not drastic, it’s still noticeable.

Stabilization

Both the GO 3 and GO 2 benefit from features like 360-degree horizon leveling and Insta360’s impressive FlowState stabilization.

My preferred shooting mode is FreeFrame Mode (Pro Video on the GO 2), where you can select the field of view (FOV) and aspect ratio after shooting.

This flexibility enables you to create vertical, horizontal, and square format videos from the same clip. You can even adjust the stabilization mode during post-processing, providing a high level of versatility.

insta360 x3 stabilization

However, it’s worth noting that the GO 3 still has a maximum resolution of 1440p at 50fps when shooting in this mode, which was a disappointment for us.

Size & Weight

The GO 2 is smaller and lighter compared to the GO 3, making it highly portable. This compactness is ideal for activities like micro drone usage.

The GO 3, on the other hand, is slightly larger in all dimensions and weighs about 9 grams more than the GO 2. While this may not be significant for most users, it can be noticeable when attaching the camera to a micro drone.

Battery Life

The GO 2 features a 210 mAh battery, providing a limited shooting time of approximately 30 minutes without the pod

The GO 3 boasts a larger 310 mAh battery, resulting in a 50% increase in shooting time compared to the GO 2. Users can now expect up to 45 minutes of recording without the pod, offering significantly improved battery life.

Mounting System

The GO 2 offers accessories for mounting without the case, but they may be less secure or more challenging to set up.

go 3 mounting system

The GO 3 introduces a magnetic clamp mounting system similar to DJI’s Action 2 and Osmo Action 3. It includes a clamp-to-tripod-thread adapter and a rotating ball head for convenient framing.

The magnetic clamp works with both the Action Pod and the GO 3 itself, providing secure and quick attachment options.

Software & Features

Both the Insta360 Go 2 and Go 3 utilize the same Insta360 app, which is consistent across all Insta360 cameras. If you’re already familiar with using an Insta360 camera, you’ll feel right at home, and that’s definitely a plus.

Excitingly, there are new recording modes available. The Go 3 introduces the pre-recording feature, enabling you to capture 10, 15, or 30 seconds of video before pressing the record button. It’s worth noting that this feature does have an impact on the camera’s battery life. You can also schedule record times, a handy feature for capturing timelapses such as a breathtaking sunrise.

insta360 GO 3 vs GO 2: Pros & Cons

Comparing the insta360 GO 3 and GO 2, let’s take a closer look at the strengths and weaknesses of each:

insta360 GO 3

Pros:

  1. LCD screen and remote monitoring: The GO 3 boasts the advantage of having an LCD screen, allowing you to easily preview your shots and make adjustments on the go. Additionally, remote monitoring enables you to view the camera’s perspective from your smartphone, providing enhanced convenience and control.

  3. Up to 2.7K recording: With the GO 3, you can capture your adventures in stunning 2.7K resolution, delivering impressive visual quality and detail.

Cons:

  1. More expensive: The GO 3 comes at a higher price point compared to the GO 2, making it a less budget-friendly option for those seeking a more affordable camera.
  2. Slightly larger and heavier: In terms of size and weight, the GO 3 is slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor, which may be a consideration for those looking for the most compact and lightweight camera.

insta360 GO 2

Pros:

  1. Smaller and lighter than the Go 3: The GO 2 excels in terms of compactness and portability. Its smaller size and lighter weight make it incredibly easy to carry around and use in various settings and activities.
  2. Significantly cheaper: One of the notable advantages of the GO 2 is its significantly lower price compared to the GO 3. This makes it a more cost-effective choice for individuals on a tighter budget.
  3. Clamshell case offers better protection: The GO 2 comes with a clamshell case that provides superior protection for the camera, ensuring its safety during transportation and storage.

Cons:

  1. Image quality isn’t as good: While the GO 2 offers impressive features, its image quality may not be on par with the GO 3. This could be a consideration for those seeking the highest level of visual clarity and detail.
  2. Requires app to preview video: Unlike the GO 3, the GO 2 necessitates the use of an app to preview video footage, which may be a minor inconvenience for some users.

Worth the Upgrade?

I would choose the Go 3 over the Go 2, as it’s priced similarly but offers superior features, particularly the action pod.

Also, the Go 2 is becoming hard to find in online markets, including Amazon and the official Insta360 website, so you’re more likely to find it used.

If you already own the Go 2, there’s no pressing need to upgrade, but if you’re deciding between the Go 3 and Go 2, I’d recommend going for the Go 3.

Thanks for reading! 🙏

I hope this guide helped you figure out which one is the better choice for you – insta360 GO 3 or GO 2 🙂
