FOV, or Field of View, is a powerful feature that can dramatically shift your GoPro Hero 13′s perspective.
The camera comes with several built-in FOV options, like Large, SuperViewet HyperView, each suited for different shooting styles and scenarios.
What’s more, with the new Ultra-Wide Mods, you can extend your field of view to an impressive 177 degrees!
In this article, you’ll discover exciting new mods to expand your Hero 13’s FOV and learn how to set them up for the best results.
PRISE DE VUE RAPIDE
- Utilisez SuperView for expansive shots, or Linéaire for focused, distortion-free scenes.
- Capture vibrant outdoor shots during golden hours—the first or last hour of sunlight.
- Set it to Auto for simplicity, or switch to Manual with presets for specific lighting conditions.
- Try out new Ultra Wide mod pour le Champ de vision de 177
If you don’t have much time, watch this video where I explain the best FOV setting for ALL the GoPro models (including Hero 13):
FOV Explained
Champ de vision (FOV) refers to the visible area captured by your GoPro at any given moment. It’s the angle through which the camera can see, and it can be measured horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. FOV is influenced by factors like distance, sensor size, and the lens’s focal length.
For example, the human eye sees about 210 degrees horizontally et 150 degrees vertically, while a camera with a standard 50mm lens and full-frame sensor covers around 40 degrees horizontally et 27 degrees vertically.
In photography and videography, FOV directly impacts the perspective, composition, and depth of field. A wider FOV will capture more of the scene but may introduce some distortion and reduce finer details. On the other hand, a narrower FOV gives you more focused, zoomed-in shots but may leave out some elements from the scene.
GoPro Hero 13 FOV
When using the GoPro Hero 13, choosing the right FOV, whether it’s Wide, Linear, SuperView, or even the extended 177-degree ultra-wide mod, allows you to capture scenes perfectly tailored to your subject and creative vision.
Linéaire
If you want a more natural look without fisheye distortion, Linear is the way to go. It straightens out lines, providing a narrower view (about 30% less than Wide), but with superb stabilization. Because Linear has less FOV, it allows more sensor space for stabilization, making it ideal for smoother, more stable footage. If you shoot in Wide but want a Linear look later, you can switch to Linear in post-production using the Application GoPro Quik or other programs.
Large
This mode offers the typical fisheye distortion that GoPro is known for, providing a broad, immersive field of view.
SuperView
Available only in 16:9 mode, SuperView captures the Wide Lens view on a 4:3 frame, compressing it into a 16:9 frame. While it doesn’t increase the horizontal view compared to Wide, it adds 33% more vertical view, which makes it perfect for action shots where height matters, like biking or skiing. The vertical compression causes some distortion, with the center looking normal and the sides stretching outward, making it great for POV sports where the middle of the frame stays sharp.
HyperView
Similar to SuperView but even more immersive, HyperView takes the full 8:7 aspect ratio and compresses it into a 16:9 frame. This offers 55% more vertical space than Wide 16:9 and 17% more than SuperView, though it introduces more stretching at the edges. For fast-moving, high-action sports, HyperView provides an exciting, immersive look.

GoPro Hero 13 FOV Tip
Choisir le bon Champ de vision (FOV) for your GoPro Hero 13 can really set the mood and capture the action just right. After filming plenty of ski adventures, I’ve found that vertical framing can sometimes be a real winner.
Why? It lets you catch both the ski tips and the sky in one shot, giving your footage that full, immersive experience.
This method reminds me of how the Max Lens Mod works. You get that awesome ability to see both the action (like your skis or handlebars) and the horizon at once, making the whole scene feel more natural and engaging.
It’s a great way to avoid that disconnected, “drone-like” feeling and really pull your audience into the moment.
