GoPro Splice is GoPro’s own free editing app for mobile that lets you edit your GoPro videos easy and fast on your smartphone, tablet or ipad. It’s designed for those who are looking to create simple videos shot with GoPro as it’s not a professional video editing software. However it’s great for creating quick videos for social media and for sharing it with family and friends.

This is GoPro Splice’s introduction video:

Our Review of GoPro Splice App

Splice makes it extremely easy to create fully customized, professional-looking videos on your iPhone/iPad.

What we like: When you open Splice for the first time, you can either load a video and images from your library or you can record something new. You can also add new audio, video and photos to the track and move them around. It lets you save high resolution videos without any annoying watermarks or self-promotion. Some other things that this app lets you do are- positioning, sizing, cropping, and more before rendering a final video. Then it’s free 🙂

What we don’t like: The loading feature of this app is not up to the mark because it doesn’t show thumbnails for all of your albums until you go into them. However, the major issue with Splice is not functionality, but its setup and use. The interface is, at times, unclear. Many options are not labelled clearly; so, you need to figure out a lot of things by guesswork when creating or editing a video for the first time.

But, for those who can bypass these issues, Splice is a good video editor for mobile.

How to Edit Videos with GoPro Splice

Splice is not your regular mobile video editor. It’s completely custom yet easy-to-use. So, no matter what your skill level is, you can easily edit your videos using this app’s powerful tools.

Here are some steps you can follow to edit your videos using Splice:

  1. Open the app and choose your favourite moments from your phone’s library.
  2. Customize the video(s) according to your needs: pick transitions, add filters, trim clips etc.
  3. You can also add your still photos to the video and create a documentary-style movie.
  4. Add text overlays or title slides where required.
  5. Add music from Splice’s library, your iTunes library or even your own voice (using built-in voice recorder). You can also trim and mix multiple tracks.
  6. When you’re done with the editing, and have created the movie as per your needs, you can post it to Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and more right from the app, or save it in HD on your iPhone’s Camera Roll.

GoPro Splice vs GoPro Quik

Both Splice & Quik have been built to conveniently create and/or edit your GoPro videos. Simple interface and a variety of sharing options is something that both these apps have.

Quik, as the name suggests, is meant to do quick edits for effortless sharing of your content to social media. It has various tools to automatically edit your footage. But there is one annoying thing about this app: it often crashes in the final step.

Splice, on the other hand, lets you have complete control over editing with various familiar features, if you’ve previously dealt with video editing in a desktop software. It lets you do transition, keep titles, easily trim & cut your footage, and so much more… But the thing that’s lacking in this app is that it doesn’t offer direction, instruction, and design needed to make it easy to use for casual users.

Final Words

I found Splice to be a feature-rich video editing tool. It makes mobile video editing enjoyable and you can achieve some nice (simple) looking edits just from your phone! I love the fact that I can use this free app on the go and wherever I am, and still be able to compose short videos (with effects and transitions too!) that I can share on social media.

So, if you are looking for a simple video editing app for mobile, you should definitely check it out, and then let me know what you think in the comments section below!
